Valley of Itria / Valle D`Itria

is situated between Locorotondo and Martina Franca, about 30 kms from Taranto, the capital of the province.
Countless vineyards extend over the even and hilly scenery. The Valley is covered with ancient olive trees, fruit and almond trees.
Drystone walls separate neatly cultivated fileds. For centuries the stones of these walls have been collected from the fields by farmers. They are also used for the trulli, the typical construction of this region: a round buliding with a conic roof.
Almost 5000 of these unique buildings are situated here in the Valley. The houses in white chalk appear like little cathedrals amidst this colorful fairytale scenery.
Not surprisingly, the region and the trulli have been included in the UNESCO World Cutural Heritage Sites in 1996.
